December 2001
The Agro-business Bank of Georgia opened its seventh sub-branch at Dedoplistskharo, Kacheti. The town of Dedoplistskharo has a population of some 10,000 people and the region of Dedoplistskharo has a population of some 36,000, the majority of whom are involved in some form of agricultural activity. The town lies some 130 kilometers south-east of Tbilisi and the region comprises some 56,000 hectares of arable farm land and also sustains a considerable volume of livestock production. There is a large flour mill which operates only to seasonally and to a limited capacity. The new sub-branch will initially be supervised by experienced staff based at our Tsnori sub-branch - some 25 kilometres from Dedoplistskharo - until such time as locally recruited staff are properly trained. |

November 2001
Mr. Peter Shaw, Team Leader of the EU Tacis "Agro-business Bank
of Georgia" project was presented with the award of the "Individual
Consultant of the Year" by the British Consultancy Bureau at
a ceremony held at No. 1 Whitehall, London. The formal presentation
was made by HRH the Duke of Gloucester in recognition of Mr.
Shaw's efforts in the formation and establishment of the Bank.
Mr. Shaw was congratulated on his "determination and high level
of commitment, and his unstinting opposition to any political
interference which could damage the integrity of the ABG". The
award ceremony was sponsored by the Times newspaper which published
an account of the ceremony on the 23rd November.

14 October 2001

On the day of the Feast of the Twelve Apostles in Georgia,
the ABG opened its sixth sub-branch at Mtskheta. President
Shevardnadze formally opened the sub-branch. Members of
the ABG project team and the Delegation of the European
Commission in Georgia were in attendance.
-
The city of Mtskheta is the ancient capital of Georgia and
is famous in Georgia as the site of a patriarchal cathedral
dating from the 11th Century. The city is the centre of
the region of Mtskheta - Mtianeti, a largely agricultural
province of Georgia, which concentrates its activities upon
production of fruit, vegetables, livestock and dairy production.
The region has a population of some 200,000 people and contains
an abundance of ancient churches and monasteries. The robe
of the martyred Christ is reputed to be buried in the cellars
of the cathedral, as are garments of the prophet, Elijah.
Nearby, is the church of Jvari, founded in the 5th century
by King Vakhang Gorgasali.

July 2001
The ABG officially publishes its intention to sell convertible
bonds to existing and future customers of the Bank. The bonds
are convertible in two years time into ordinary shares at the
then market price in line with ABG performance. This is the
commencement of the privatisation process of the ABG, begun
with the full support of the European Commission, and leading
eventually inter alia, to the exiting of the European Commission
representation and the Government of Georgia nominations from
the governance structure of the Bank. The ABG will become "customer
owned" in line with established western European co-operative
banking principles. |
|
20
July 2001
The ABG opens its fifth sub-branch at Kutaisi. Kutaisi is the
second city in Georgia with a population of 400,000. The hinterland
of Kutaisi is well known for its diverse agricultural productivity,
specialising in particular in cereal production (maize) fruit
& vegetables, and dairy produce. The city is twinned with Newport,
Gwent in the UK and is the fulcrum of economic activity in the
western regions of the Republic. The sub-branch is initially
staffed by three personnel. |
|
1
February 2001
The Agro-business Bank of Georgia opened its fourth representative
office at Telavi ( 160 kilometers northeast of Tbilisi). Telavi
has a population of approximately 50,000 people and lies in
the heart of Kakheti. The region is well known for viticulture,
livestock breeding, poultry production and horticulture in addition
to its historical cereal cropping activities. Prior to the formal
opening of the sub-branch some 15 loans had already been disbursed
in the Telavi region totaling some GEL 150,000. This is a firm
foundation upon which to buil future lending and deposit garnering
activities. |
|
28
November 2000
The Agro-business Bank of Georgia opened its third representative
office at Marneuli (50 kilometres south of Tbilisi). The Marneuli
region has a popu;ation of around 50,000 people, many of whom
are not indigenous Georgian but are the descendents of long
established immigrants from Azerbaijan, Armenia and Greece.
The agricultural activities of the locality concentrate on cropping,
particularly cereals and potatoes, and livestock breeding, in
particular sheep breeding for lamb, mutton and cheese. |
|
18
October 2000
The Agro-business Bank of Georgia has established a "Mobile
Bank". This is an innovative approach in Georgia. This is a
"Bank that will do Deals on Wheels". The primary and initial
intention is to provide banking services in those far-flung
regions of Georgia where it is considered ineffective at this
time to open representative offices. The mobile bank is staffed
by experienced personnel of the ABG who will impart - in cooperation
with regional officials - the aims and objectives of the Bank
to the local populace, leading on to the preparation of simple
business plans, and the ultimate sanction of small/medium sized
lending facilities. The mobile bank will not be used for the
transportation of cash. |
10
October 2000
The Agro-business Bank of Georgia opened its second representative
office at Tsnori. (120 kilometres east of Tbilisi) as a continuation
of the Bank's expansionist policy and in line with its established
philosophy. It is the firm intention of the Bank to open a third
representative office before the end of 2000, probably in Marneuli
(60 kilometres south of Tbilisi). A fourth office is scheduled
to be opened early in the new year. Firm information with regard
to location will be provided within the next few weeks. |
29
September 2000
The Agro-business Bank of Georgia hosted a five day mission
from two senior officials of Rabobank of The Netherlands. As
a result of the visit, Rabobank has provided a firm commitment
to begin the process of a "twinning" programme with the ABG.
Upon their return to The Netherlands, our colleagues will assist
the Management of the ABG in the preparation of a 3/5 "Strategic
Plan" for the ABG, drawing upon the immense experience Rabo
has in fulfillment of banking activities in the rural sector
over a period of 110 years. The Mission was supported and endorsed
by the Supervisory Board of the ABG. |
27
september 2000
The Agro-business Bank of Georgia opened its first representative
office at Gori. (70 kilometres west of Tbilisi). This office
is initially staffed by three personnel and will provide a basic
three products - lending, deposits and insurance services -
to the surrounding population. This is in line with the Bank's
expansionist policy of "locating the Bank in close proximity
to the population who will ultimately benefit - Rural Georgia."
|
6

On 6th of July Bank's directors met with farmers, processors
and traders from Gori region and updated them with regard to
